Community Mural Project
July 26-27, 9am-4pm
As part of our continuing efforts to build community involvement along the San Diego River,
The San Diego River Park Foundation's Community Enhancement Team seeks volunteers to help with a new professionally designed river mural project. This is a fun and meaningful way to give back to our community and our river through public art.
Even if you have no experience with murals or art, you are encouraged to participate. Artists will be on hand to guide us through the process and all supplies will be provided. Families and students are welcomed!
The project will take place over two days, Saturday, July 26th and Sunday, July 27th with two shifts available each day 9am-12:30 and 12:30-4pm. Volunteers are welcomed to work as many shifts as they wish.

La Jolla Music Society SummerFest 2008

Enjoy 16 concerts performed by 70 of the world's best musicians from August 1 through 24 during La Jolla Music Society SummerFest 2008. SummerFest 2008 pays tribute to the most revered composers of all time while continuing to promote the creation and performance of modern-day masterworks.
Some of the highlights from this year's festival include "SummerFest Under the Stars" – a free outdoor concert overlooking the Pacific Ocean in La Jolla (8/14), a three-part concert series dedicated exclusively to the works of Brahms (8/5 , 8/12 , 8/19), the "Evening with…" series showcasing the talents of three virtuosos, including Kennedy Center Award recipient Leon Fleisher(8/20), Leila Josefowicz (8/6), Vladimir Feltsman (8/13), French composer and jazz legend Jacques Loussier (8/15) and performances by Grammy-Award winning artists violinist Gil Shaham and pianist Garrick Ohlsson.
"We bring the world to San Diego." As one of Southern California's leading presenters of world-class performing arts, La Jolla Music Society contributes to San Diego's cultural vitality year-round through a rich variety of presentations, including classical, jazz and contemporary music, and dance.

24th Annual California Coastal Cleanup Day
September 20, 9am-12pm, Over 60 sites throughout the county
Mark your calendar for the biggest volunteer cleanup event in San Diego County and join together with your community in keeping our ocean, coastlines and waterways clean and free of debris.
Each year, San Diego Coastkeeper (SDCK), I Love A Clean San Diego (ILACSD) and the California Coastal Commission partner to coordinate more than 60 coastal, inland and underwater cleanup sites throughout San Diego County as part of California Coastal Cleanup Day (CCD), an annual statewide and international cleanup effort to support the marine environment.
Last year 6,212 volunteers participated in removing 94,358 pounds of trash and recyclables from San Diego County and Baja California beaches. CCD is a great way for the community to help restore our beaches and waterways, and learn how individual action can make a tremendous difference to keep our beaches and watersheds pollution free.

Diseases of the heart and stroke -- the nation's No. 1 and No. 3 killers -- and all other cardiovascular diseases, claim more than 870,000 American lives a year, including over 6,600 San Diegans. The American Heart Association is committed to reducing these numbers through research, education, and advocacy. In fact, in 2006, the American Heart Association invested more than $473 million in these efforts so people across America can live stronger, healthier lives. Locally, the association invested over $3.3 million in funding to San Diego Research Centers for cardiovascular and stroke research in 2007.
This year's goal is to exceed $2 million. Your participation will help us meet this goal, and reduce the toll heart disease and stroke takes on our community.

MCRD Bootcamp Challenge

If the thought of an obstacle course made up of trenches, tunnels, cargo nets, push up stations, hay jumps and over 50 other obstacles wasn't scary enough, runners will also have to contend with sixty hard core Marine Drill Instructors "staffing" the course and "pushing", "driving" and "encouraging" the runners to go to their limits and beyond. For those who've run the Bootcamp Challenge before they've had one thing to say, "Awesome!" For those who haven't, they'll find it's one of the funnest and most memorable times they'll have all year.

Walk A Mile in Her Shoes Fundraiser
Downtown San Diego. Thursday Oct. 16th at 4:00pm
Walk A Mile in Her Shoes benefits the YWCA of San Diego County.
This is the organizations first annual walk to raise awareness about domestic violence.
The walk will take place in downtown San Diego on Thursday, October 16, and all proceeds will benefit the YWCA's local programs, which assist women and children who are affected by the growing amount of domestic violence within San Diego County.
The YWCA is asking men of all ages to sign up now to strut their stuff for a mile in a pair of high heels. Registration is currently underway now for individuals and teams from companies and community groups both large and small.
Registration begins at 4:00 PM, walk at 5:00 PM and reception to follow at 5:30 to 7:00 PM Walk registration is a $100 donation to the YWCA, to sponsor another walker a contribution of $50 or more is asked.
